Ore wa Otoko da! Manga Creator Mutsumi Tsukumo Passes Away

The Asahi Shimbun is reporting on Monday that manga creator Mutsumi Tsukumo (real name Mutsumi Kitagawa) passed away on Saturday after a battle with lung cancer. She was 65.
Tsukumo debuted as a manga creator with with the Yukiko no Hoshi manga in Kodansha's Weekly Shōjo Friend magazine in 1967. She launched the Ore wa Otoko da! manga (pictured at right) in 1970 in Shueisha's Weekly Seventeen magazine. The manga inspired a live-action television adaptation starring Kensaku Morita in 1971 and 1972, and then a live-action sequel film in 1987.
Other manga she is well known for among her more than 40 works include Kaze no Rinbu, Irodoro no Koro, and Yami no Hate kara. Irodoro no Koro earned an Excellence Award in the 5th Japan Cartoonists Awards in 1976, and Yami no Hate kara earned an Excellence Award in the 22nd Japan Cartoonists Awards in 1993.
