I'm especially looking forward to this novel. Because of WSJ making Kubo finish Bleach a lot sooner than he had planned, a lot of things were left unanswered, as well as what feels like several dozen loose ends. And from what I heard this particular novel covers things like spoiler[what happened to the arancars, Urahara, Yoruichi, and the biggest loose end: the soul king]. So all in all this is a release I anticipate.

God I love Kubo's art. Glad he at least got these novels green-lit to address the loose ends that Shonen Jump forced on the readers.

Can other writers handle Bleach's material better than Kubo (or, more specifically, completely burnt out Kubo) can? I read Bleach for years, and I know Kubo has excellent artistic skill (especially fashion), but as a writer he's better at big ideas and short, contained plots. He did a great job every time there was a short story to be told via flashback--the Visored/Vizard backstory and Ichigo's parents' first meeting were especially good, but long winded battle arcs tended to trip Bleach up.
I'm very curious as to what other writers can do with the world. |

spoiler[Hisagi Bankai incoming] if the anime ever comes back I can see the two novels being adapted into some short epilogue filler like what Naruto Shippiden did (which it probably won't happen but that's besides the point)

I'm interested at their being a new writer on Bleach. I thought Kubo had a good idea but I like the movies more than most post-Soul Society stuff (especially movie 3) and I think the Kageroza Inaba and Muramasa fillers were better than most of the canon content near them.

Interesting you should mention that. Back when we still had the Big Three, I judged them thusly: 1) Oda: Great storyteller, average illustrator 2) Kishimoto: Average storyteller, good illustrator 3) Kubo: Below Average storyteller, great illustrator So, Kishimoto was basically the one with middle-of-the-road talents in both categories, while Oda and Kubo like mirrors of one another, to a degree anyway. I have to say I think Oda is truly a genius when it comes to storytelling -- amazingly talented at it. If he were more willing to place actual romance in his One-piece stories, I'd say he was nearly flawless, but not having romance makes his characters seem odd, IMO. Anyway, this is about Kubo. Kubo, IMO, started with some good ideas, but sadly he lacked the skill to build on them and progress them to a satisfactory ending. I agree that if a more skilled storyteller came along, he might be able to better utilize the ingredients Kubo supplied, though I'm always pretty wary of people coming into someone else's work as it often doesn't end well. I think Kubo should focus his talents more on drawing and less on story-telling, though if he does come up with a new story, I'll at least consider what he does and won't just dismiss it out-of-hand. |
