I hope its either something similar to Colosseum and  (where you catch Shadow Pokemon), that Pokemon "Stars" game that's been rumored about, or something so surprising that it would blow its predecessors out of the water......all of which are unrealistic expectations (Stars is most likely the product)

I hope this is gen 8. I don't want to see anymore mainline Pokemon games on the 3DS after US/UM.

It's not. They specified it's a CORE Pokemon RPG. As far "Stars", that name is stupid. Pokemon Sun=Pokemon Star because the sun is a star.

Please neither.
They announced it would be a brand new core RPG, so I think that easily edges out any idea of it being Colosseum/.
It better not be Pokemon Stars. No more Alola. No more Sun/Moon rehashes. Thankfully, I have some confidence that it will be something different. If it were some form of Sun/Moon rehash they'd most likely have it much further along and would have shown it. Seeing as they only could announce it by word with no title, it looks like it will be something new.

Not that a mainline Pokemon game being on the 3DS would effect Pokemon games on the Switch but okay.

Probably not. The usual routine is, "New region followed by remake". Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is the remake. Hopefully this will be as game changing as X and Y was for the 3DS if Nintendo plays their cards right.

Gamefreak has broken from a lot of their patterns lately. While you're probably right, I wouldn't be so sure about it.
Hopefully we'll see D/P remakes somewhere down the line on the Switch. It would be really interesting to see how Gamefreak remakes a game in the old 2D style. I'm hoping they'd go all out and reimagine it visually.

Except that the Switch Pokemon game IS a mainline game, and Game Freak normally doesn't do cross-gen with Pokemon. They moved from the GameBoy Advance SP to the DS, no GameBoy version for Diamond and Pearl. They moved from the DS to the 3DS, not DS version for X and Y. It will be the same here. 3DS will be dropped in favor of the Switch and get no future mainline Pokemon titles, as they will all be on Switch as the 3DS is phased out and replaced by the Switch.

Although Pokemon Gold and Silver were Gameboy games (that would play in color if played on the Gameboy Color) and Crystal was a GBC exclusive game.

I await to see what new mysteries and treasures the Gen VIII titles of Pokémon will bring on the Nintendo Switch!  I wonder if they'll be able to somehow connect to Ultra Sun and Moon on the 3DS...

Probably nothing more than transferring your Pokemon via Pokemon Bank.

That's when they make Pokemon Bank compatible and you transfer Pokemon to the Switch game via Bank.
