Alita did everything to exceed my expectations and was an incredible experience I was glad to see on the big screen. I'm so happy it proved the early predictions wrong and made it past the $400 mark.

I helped! I saw it this weekend, and was completely blown away with how good it was. I've dug up my old copies of the manga and will be rereading them, plus I'll get the new "Alita on Mars" series.

I am stuck in Japan for awhile. Tried to see it during my quick windows in the States, but it wasn't to be. Wonder if it is subtitled in english here in Japan.

It's bewildering that this kind of epic spectacle only got $400. Have to thank China for raking half of those. This movie deserved better!

Depending on where you are it may be showing in the original English with Japanese subtitles.

I hope it can get a sequel. I didn't ultra love it but I think it'd be cool if it could get a series. Just for context from BoxOfficeMojo...

No Divergent movie grossed $300M worldwide. Three of them have been made.
No Maze Runner movie grossed $300M worldwide. Three of them have been made.
No Underworld movie grossed $200M worldwide. Five of them have been made.
Two Resident Evil movies made over $300M worldwide. None made $350M. Six of them were made.
Edge of Tomorrow made $370M and is getting a sequel.

Something's gone horribly awry imo if $400M+ at box office alone (no BD/DVD or streaming money yet) isn't enough.

At this point it all depends on if Disney thinks it's successful enough to invest further in a property that isn't their own original franchise or part of the Marvel machine.

The studio certainly isn't happy with this number.

But, 400 mil is not chump change.

A sequel can be negotiated on a significantly smaller budget.

Though the quality would suffer considering the scale of places the story goes. But if they move to more practical effects, it's doable on a $100 million budget. $200 mil if we include marketing. With sequel potential capable of reaching $500 million if it's good.

I'd love to see a sequel made but even if it doesn't happen, I felt like Alita ended on such a strong note that I'm satisfied with what we got.

Is it really Disney's call? I would think that James Cameron would have the final say.

I don't feel like looking all those examples up, so I'm just going to give some numbers in regards to the Resident Evil movie franchise.

The total budget for all the Resident Evil movies together is listed online as being around $288 million, with the box office total being $1.2 billion. That's a significant difference in money spent versus money made when compared to Alita's single movie budget of $200 million and box office total of $400 million.

So from a financial aspect making a sequel to the original Resident Evil movie made sense since it made the movie's budget three times over ($33mil budget, $103 mil box office). Each movie went on to do roughly at least 3 times what their budget for each movie was (with the last three movies actually doing a bit better than that, Afterlife and The Final Chapter being particularly successful at 5x budget box office return and 7x budget box office return).

Hmm I decided to look up Maze Runner out of curiosity, original movie budget was $34 million with a box office of $348 million, which again, is a huge amount of profit when compared to budget.

Out of the things listed, about the only one I can find questionable is Edge of Tomorrow as it had a budget over $178mil and only made a little over double the budget. Buuuuut... Tom Cruise, so... that might be part of it.

Divergent seems to also have done at least 3x its budget, as did the original Underworld movie (that franchise seemed to have the weakest returns, but the budgets were likely low enough that it didn't matter as much to them. I mean the entire Underworld franchise's budget was roughly the same as the single Alita movie, and the franchise box office total is over $400mil).

Making over a certain amount of money in box office may be impressive, but companies have to look at the financial aspect. How much did it cost to make, how much of a return is there. If someone is putting their own personal money into a pet project then things can get sequels regardless of what they make back, though I don't know if Cameron is doing that or willing to do that.

I'm glad I ended up watching this. I never saw any commercials and didn't expect much going in though.

Disney owns all of 20th Century Fox now, so unless Cameron switches to another studio, I can't imagine a director could just do whatever they want with a sequel without Disney's approval. Alita ended up doing better than expected but I don't know if it would be successful enough for another studio to take a risk on an IP they don't own just for the sake of Cameron's passion project.

I'd actually say because disney has a say, it's more likely to get a sequel. That said we likely will have to wait some time before that gets a greenlight.

Reason being that Disney can do use this to offset other production downtimes. After this year we won't (unless something changes) have a major(not character story) StarWars release. The first couple of years of this will likely be Avatar sequels but once that void is also complete i can see Disney asking Camereon for more Alita because of it's unique appeal and strong female lead which is something Disney really lacks.

I can see Disney being hesitant because it's an adaptation though. I'd also say that Disney isn't exactly lacking in strong female leads between Rey of Star Wars or Captain Marvel. You could say that they aren't very popular strong female leads, but they are strong female leads nonetheless, unless by strong, you mean well-written.
