weird release strategy especially when disney now did a good job keeping episodesin one spot and putting up after airing
I prefer 1/2 eps a day even if months behind. |

Canada seems to be getting it first on May 9th on Teletoon. Don't know it they will get it on Netflix. https://press.pokemon.com/en-CA/The-Pokemon-Company-International-Reveals-New-Animation-Trailer-and-De
Also, the UK isn't getting it til September and will air on the POP channel. https://www.pokemon.com/uk/pokemon-news/pokemon-journeys-the-series-coming-september-1-2020-to-pop/ So if this is a Netflix Original anime, this will be the most region restricted Original anime I know of if the US is the only country getting it there. |

Which leads me to believe that Disney X D might still be broadcasting it in some capacity at some point. The press release says that while Netflix is getting first dibs on premieres, it has exclusive streaming rights, which is different than broadcast rights. Regardless, I'm not a Pokemon fan but it's pretty crappy that Netflix is pushing their binge model once again. By doing this, places like Canada will have already aired over half the episodes because they refuse to upload weekly. Dumb. |

...in US. They were sitting on worldwide TV rights, not airing the show for a while already. And yes, several European territories announced TV broadcasts today - all of them on FTA channels, if I'm not mistaken - but I hope that still means the June date is a worldwide Netflix premiere (it's a premium platform after all). |

I wonder what effect this will have on the Viz DVD releases and rights of the previous seasons and movies? I guess future movies will also be on Netlix only. Any chance this could include the Japanese track like the Mewtwo CGI movie?

Even with Pokémon Netflix is using a painful release. Why are they so allergic to simulcast? People that want to wait for dub can still wait!

Well this came out of nowhere, I don't know if this has something to do with the fact that Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution premiered on the platform as well.
Netflix also announced that One Piece is going to be available in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, maybe it's linked to the live-action show in development. I wonder if this means that Cowboy Bebop will be available on Netflix due to the live-action show, I don't know if it's available in some regions but it is not available where I live. |

Given how poorly Sun and Moon did ratings wise for Disney I doubt they even bid on it. The Pokemon anime isnt worth much these days so I think this is just TPCI sticking it wherever they can |

As far as main companions go Iris, Serena, and Lillie kept their names. Although I assume Lillie is pronounced differently. |

Serena's pronunciation was different too. And Kukui also kept his name, though I am not sure you can call him main companion. Though these characters were game characters, while Goh is anime only character, so in that regard, he may be first, if we only limit it to the main characters.
Here in the Czech Republic, Pokémon is exclusively on Netflix since XY (and it even was one of the first Czech dubs on Netflix back then) and AFAIK, some other European countries got Pokémon on Netflix too (though some not exclusively), so nothing new here. I am actually surprised it wasn't on Netflix in US yet. |

Both Czech Republic and Poland, along with many European countries, had Disney sitting on the exclusive pay TV license since 2008 (!), and in several countries it wasn't making use of it (yet TPCI was still dubbing the show and movies, although just barebones - no specials etc.). Like, at all. As far as I'm concerned, though, S&M anime is pretty much available on Netflix worldwide except Asia.

Disney did air Pokémon here for the first 3 (maybe all 4, I don't remember right now) DP anime seasons, but they stopped after that and, as you are writing, they were sitting on the rights. And after TV Barrandov stopped caring for Pokémon after the second BW season, Pokémon got in limbo here, until Netflix took it, so in that regard, Netflix could be called "Pokémon saviour" here.
