Is it just me or does he sound like someone they pulled off the street? A small part of me thinks this voice could work but...the rest thinks he sounds a bit plain.

Hmmm...i'll need a chance for it to grow on me.

Whew! Thank god it wasn't Bosch (I was seriously worried they would try casting him once more, since he seems to be an industry darling).

I have mixed feelings about what I heard, but I'm mainly thankful they seemed to have gone with a new person (not your textbook casting people).

Also, didn't L sound significantly deeper sounding than the Japanese track?

I personally don't like the sound of the VA for Light in english nor his seiyu(Japanese voice) because I personally thought that his voice should deeper and a bit calmer where as his Japanese voice sounded a bit higher than what I was hoping for. As for his english voice, I think that it needs to sound a bit deeper and more on the calm side.

Hmmm ... I'm not liking Light's voice. It may grow on me, but based on that little sampling, it wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting something that sounded a bit closer to the seiyu's voice. L, on the other hand, sounded just plain weird. Was that supposed to be his real voice or his distorted voice from early on in the series? If it is his real voice, then I'm probably gonna avoid this dub. It's already great subtitled.

The main problem is that Light's voice is really lacking in the "sinister" department. Hopefully progress will make it better. Now L, actually sounds pretty cool to me. But he only spoke so little in his normal voice for me to make a good judgment.

I'll have to actually watch the dub for a few episodes before I decide whether its worth it.

I... don't like it at all. He's like a whiny teenager "SIN! CRIME! ZOMG", not the more mature adolescent with a strong, albeit warped, sense of justice.

Am I the only one who got a huge CHO SEUNG-HUI feeling from English!Light's (badly written badly inflected) monologue? Sure, they perform similar actions and they're both Ebil with a capital E, but they are NOT supposed to be the same at all.

I heard Light's voice on Friday and I'll still stick to what I said before:

The voice acting is strong. Really, the acting can be way better than the seiyu's counterpart. However, the voice does not have a sinister or even a dark voice. It sounds like he is more of a whiney teenager with a killing spree than a dark young adult with a sense of justice. I really do hope that it'll grow on me or use a different voice. Maybe it is just a narrative voice and not Light's voice. Who knows. Rolling Eyes

I actually don't have as much of a problem with Light's voice as I do with L's voice. It's much deeper than I ever expected it to be. At first I thought it was just part of the warp, which is also kinda weird since that usually comes out high pitched, but if you notice he has one line in this trailer without it and his voice is still pretty deep.

It's mostly the distorted voice. His real voice is only at the very end. Otherwise, that would just be....odd.

As has been said, Light does sound too whiny. Sure he's a teenager, but he doesn't really play the part of one.

Ah, I didn't catch the real voice at the end. I just watched it again and now I see. Thanks. L doesn't sound so bad, but it's tough to judge based on that tiny sampling. The distorted voice actually sounds pretty neat though.

Huh... my first impression was that I didn't like him - but you know what, if he just slows down a bit I think he's going to be really good. I think he's definitely got the sinister edge there, and what comes to being a whiny teenager - hey, that's what Light is Razz

Definitely different to Mamoru Miyano, who cannot do wrong in my eyes, but I think this one is going to be good. That trailer got the hair on the back of my neck to raise up Shocked Can't wait for the DVDs... I stopped watching the anime when it was licensed - I've read the manga so I know what's happening, would rather wait for the release.

Being a dub supporter for all these years, this time they really got me pissed. My blood was spoiled high while I watch the trailer especially during the narrative by whoever that is voicing Light. While the Japanese version has Mamoru Miyano, an incredible young voice actor to does Light, Viz decided to picked up some bo-ho from Ocean Group to do Light.
Viz is such an a$$ they are surely confident that us fans will buy the DVDs package for sure, so they just use the cheapest cost to dub the English version. My nightmare has finally came true. Neutral

Whoever is unhappy with the dub version so far like I do, you could write letter to Viz or email them about the situation. Asking them to postpone their dubbing process and pick a better group of actors to do it, or giving your suggestions.

I hope they will reconsider and not doing what 4kids once did to One Piece.

I too really like the distorted effect, and that small sampling for L does have promise. As for Light, he's really doesn't have a lot of time to work on that considering how light is so dark and then happy at a moment's notice, I really hope this works considering how dialog heavy this show is.

Man, what were they thinking. I'm not going to direct all the bashing on the voice actor who was just doing his job, but whoever casted him to do the voice for Light who seems to not be grasping what Light's character is all about; Light is manipulative, smart, power-corrupt, but a very idealistic individual and I third that this voice made him sound like a whiney, narrow-minded teenager.

After hearing this, I don't want to imagine what voice they are going to give the quirkier characters like Misa and Matsuda who are IMO going to be quite hard to find a match for them in English.
