Hilarious. Maybe scrapping Platinum Games' work was the wrong move for Cygames. Who could have guessed.

I don't think they scrapped it at all. I think they kept the core engine and assets but decided to take their time developing additional content that fits the spec, and got wrapped up in scope creep from there. Cygames is likely using this project to train staff and optimize their 3D development workflows in ways that will pay off on future projects.

The real issue is that this will likely end up competing with Final Fantasy XVI, which is a stupendously bad idea.

Why is 16 a bad idea?

This is a game that was scheduled to come out in 2018 and Cygames removed Platinum Games from the project in early 2019, over 3 years ago, with the game supposedly being very close to release. I don't have any way to explain how it will take them 4 years to complete the game other than they scrapped most if not all of Platinum Games' work and started from scratch.

They're not saying XVI is a bad idea, but a JRPG releasing around the same time as XVI is a bad idea.

And then we got Platinum Games, which are still struggling to make Bayonetta 3 and put a definite release date on it despite it was announced back in 2017, released half-assed job with Babylon's Fall after 4 years of development and with using FF14 assets to reduce the development costs and time, and still have around 3 projects under the shelf like Project G.G.

So yeah, the basic explanation is quite easy - PG is actually barely worked on the game at all at the time of the development (considering game models and graphical assets were done in-house by CyDesignation) way before they got kicked out of the project, and then after switching to the new studio COVID got in, which also impacted the development.

To use another game as an example, Final Fantasy XIV threw out most of the 2010 release when it went to version 2.0, but everything else up to 6.0 (the equivalent of four more full-length RPGs) has just been new content built to run on the existing engine. So I imagine the work Cygames contracted Platinum for amounted to a 20-hour game, a la NieR:Automata's Route A, but Cygames decided they could add the gameplay-volume equivalent of Routes B and C (or maybe more) without needing Platinum on board. That's what I meant by "scope creep": the definition of what was considered "close to release" changed. Cygames has been looking to open properly as a 3D dev shop since their work on the Zone of the Enders remaster, so they probably decided the best time to start on that was while the Granblue brand was still letting them print money. We'll probably still see the parts Platinum was directly involved in in the finished product.

Me personally, I've done some fairly noteworthy contract work, but the end of my contract meant the work was done, not that the client had to throw everything out. The client is also continuing to add on to the work I've done, as well as produce new content that relies on the work I've done without needing my involvement. That's just how contracting works.
