Pearl Harbor won an award for sound design, so I don't see this as a judgment of quality.
That said, I don't think it deserves to win, since it's basically just a recreation of the original anime title sequence. It's the one thing the show did right, but it's slavish recreation, not something unique to the production itself. |

It's not weird. A lot of shitty movies win Oscars in technical categories anyway: 2016's Sucidide Squad won Best Make-up and Hairstyling over Star Trek: Beyond, a superior movie in every instance. Pearl Harbor won for Best Sound Editing, Alice In Wonderland won Best Costume Design and Best and Best Art Direction, The Golden Compass won Best Visual Effects, and so on.
Absolutely none of them represent the movie's qualities, so Netflix Bebop can (unlikely) win, but it still will be a bad show. |

It's a great opening and a high quality series, I greatly enjoyed almost everything about this adaptation. And I love the original series as well. My heart is joyful that both versions exist

Should never expect anything from live-action adaptations of anime.
The OP live adaptation is around the corner, right? I'm personally not a fan of live-action adaptations because the bulk of those end up being appalling and disappointing. |

I mean... it was great 24 years ago, it's great now. One of the most iconic intros to any television show as far as I'm concerned. I like to think of this as the original work getting its due recognition.

Didn't watch it nor care much for watching... any live-action I mean.
Don't have a problem with those who watch and like them though, it's just not for my personal taste. The only thing I'd say is pretty weird is a prize like this going for something that is basically an adaptation from existing medium... I mean, it's as good a live-action recreation as it could get probably, but isn't it a bit weird to even nominate something like that? Like, there is no originality to it. A whole bunch of points you are giving it in a multi-score based judgement would really be for the original, not the live-action recreation. I dunno how these things get nominated though... is it all subjective or is there some objective system behind? |

I imagine it’s less about originality and more about the technical merits. It’s a really impressive opening from a technical standpoint and it was one of my favourite aspects of the adaptation. Even more so than the original since while I like the music I never found the original op all that interesting visually. |

This news reminded me this show even existed. Tons of bad shows/movies get award nods for a tech aspect,so it's not a big deal.

The bad homage to a 1998 animated scene is up for a technical category Emmy so the new staff didn´t even have to try?
The Bebop OP always reminded me of the Dirty Pair: Project Eden opening credits but a bunch of 80s anime did similar things. Even James Bond. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQqqb1jkwlA I not suggesting plagiarism or whatever but I found the outpouring of pure love for the OP a bit much. I don´t think it´s that unique. It simply doesn´t scream anime. Space Cobra has the most impressive OP for space western if you ask me.
