This is a spectacular display of the consequences of an astronomically bad take from a company who needed not to even try for obvious reasons. How Kadokawa thought they would not be raked under the coals, even in Japan, is beyond me.

This is completely correct, the staff is treated like garbage, their scheduling sucks, and they adapt so many animes in a year and choose quantity over quality which makes most of them look like garbage. This isn't some "white-knight anti-japanese racist" and as many buzzwords you can fit propaganda. |

Not mentioned in the article, but Tsuguhiko Kadokawa took over the company in 1993 after his elder brother, Haruki, was arrested, charged and eventually convicted of cocaine possession and importation. While I think from the outside the Tokyo Olympics were considered a success, internally it just seemed to be riddled with so many issues, more so than some previous Olympics.

The entire history between Tsugihiko & Haruki Kadokawa is just insane. First, Haruki allegedly ousted Tsugihiko from Kadokawa so that his own son would be next in line to inherit it (the official word is that Tsugihiko "resigned"), which resulted in Tsugihiko founding MediaWorks & leading an exodus of staff, including both editors & mangaka(!), to the new company. Then, when Haruki was charged, Tsugihiko was brought back to Kadokawa & launched Monthly Shonen Ace magazine by killing off two other shonen manga magazines that Haruki was previously launched. Then, when Haruki finished his jail time early, he founded Kadokawa Haruki Corporation (yes, seriously, that's the company's name), and there's no doubt that the name was chose solely so that he could potentially mess with any new deals Tsugihiko wanted to make by creating brand confusion. Really, after this, these two brothers were truly made for each other. |

the only surprise in this whole story is that for some reason this cherished and long-standing traditional Japanese business practice (aka bribing) has somehow come to light this time. what is 100% possibly a standard practice got finally uncovered, probably for obscure reasons we will never know (inside job/whistleblower/revenge, who knows). it'd be nice if the umpteenth scandal would bring some transparency to public and private business practices in Japan, but I'm not that hopeful, TBH.
