I said this about the Eisner Awards, too, but it's disappointing that all of the nominees were shōnen and seinen titles. Like, c'mon, not even a single nom for a shōjo or josei title...? =/ I think something like Requiem of the Rose King deserved recognition, too. It's an interesting take on Shakespeare with beautiful artwork.

I think this is most likely simply because that's what the people submitting nominations are familiar with, which is probably simply due to all sorts of biases, conscious or unconscious. For one, manga primarily targeting women don't receive a fraction of the hype in the US that manga targeting primarily male readers do (I guess mostly due to the misconception that if it's not Sailor Moon it's silly/melodramatic romance for teens); and even among those manga, titles with the most hype get the most attention --> the most recognition, even in form of awards. People who only have a casual or peripherical interest in manga will usually read manga that get enough hype to reach them. And dear god, if the hype Chainsaw Man is getting was food it could feed my entire country for two years.

If you look at Japanese manga awards, many of the manga receiving awards or placements are the sort most people in the west have either never even heard of, or haven't read. A while ago in a post I mentioned some manga that should receive anime adaptations instead of the nth ancient IP being resurrected, and people reacted with "nobody knows these" except - they were acclaimed, often award-winning manga, with quite a high volume count and fairly good popularity. Just, not in the US/western fandom.

(As for Rose King, though, I think the first half absolutely deserves recognition, but then the whole thing is undone by the second half. It's a pity.)

Really? I always felt it was the opposite. Usually stuff like the Eisners and Harvey awards go to more niche titles aimed at critical appeal. Tittles like My Brother's Husband and My Lesbian Experience With Romance were pushed pretty big a few years ago. Although the last few Eisners went to Junji Ito works. The fact something with such mainstream appeal like Chinasaw Man won this year is actually pretty surprising to me.
