I liked the original Fafner but all those sequels never brought anything new or interesting.

Is this bait? Because those sequels are not only superior in every possible way to the original Fafner, but they expanded upon the themes, characters, and ideas of the original and brought them all together in a satisfying conclusion in The Beyond.

Exodus by itself is one of the best mecha anime series made in the last 20 years and it is criminally under-rated. If you think it didn't bring anything new, you must not have watched it.

Glad to see another Exodus fan. It was a great show and is indeed criminally underrated. And now it is evidently not even available for streaming. I’ve only managed to see the first three parts of The Beyond, but it LOOKED exceptionally good and I hope eventually to see the entire series, and Behind the Line, too. Fafner in all its parts is a much better series than it gets credit for.

I agree about the sequels. The series got better and better. Fafner is also one of the few series that, over the course of time, finishes off some of its cast to emphasize the hardship of war. That in contradiction to most series where the main cast always survives or only 1 character dies.

The only thing I disagree with, is the "satisfying" conclusion. spoiler[The Maya-Kazuki relationship isn't a satifying ending, at least not for me. Are they gonna get together or not? It is still unclear.].

The only downside about Fafner, for me, is that the character designs are too much alike and there are a lot of characters out there so it is sometimes hard to remember who is who again Confused
But I agree, in general, this is a underrated series in the genres of Evangelion and RahXephon, only better than NGE.

This is false. Not only are the following releases after the original great, they did add something new and interesting. However, Exodus was the last great Fafner. The Beyond was a WTF.

The Beyond is not superior to the original or any Fafner before it and the conclusion is in no way satisfying. Ending your series by spoiler[sidelining your series MC from the start (he wasn't even part of the main cast in the credits) and having him do nothing but fight a side character then making him lose to a whiny 4 year old with a teenage body (making this a kodomo series, but with the usual Fafner stuff) that started getting in the robot a few months ago compared to Kazuki's decade long experience because the staff decided to have a new MC at the end of this long running series is a WTF decision for any fan thats been watching the series 2 months shy of 15 years (when The Beyond started). That is worse than what SEED DESTINY did and even they rectified it at the end. After the ending of Exodus, how do go in that direction to end the series like that? Kazuki wasn't even involved in the final boss fight. Not only that, the 4 year old ignorantly hates Kazuki and is disrespectful to him for the wrong reasons. They made the hateful 4 year old see his old memory as baby with Kazuki holding his hand then never resolved that so he hates Kazuki forever and since he beat Kazuki, Kazuki is his little b*tch forever. Made Kazuki leave the island with his tail between his legs. I've got more to say, but I've made my point. Fafner is Kazuki's story and journey and the staff screwed him over. There were better ways to execute The Beyond that included Kazuki as the MC with the 4 year old as the deuteragonist to satisfy long time fans. And that 4 year old was Soushi Minashiro in name only. He is a different character. Shouldn't have named him after Soushi if they were going to make him have an unfriendly relationship with Kazuki.]

PS: spoiler[They screwed over Maya too. She rejected everyone that liked her in hopes of getting with Kazuki then never got anything in the end. Ended the series as a single 24 year old virgin. That's a L for her.]

Pity that The Beyond screwed the ending like that. One of the things I LOVED about Fafner was the character dynamics. And to spoiler[deconstruct the interpersonal relationships between Kazuki and Soushi and Maya is frankly a big F You to fans who have had fifteen years invested in these characters

Pity.]

I do not mind if they planned to have The Beyond be the "game changer" project. But to blow a big f*ck up to its past theme is a huge mistake. The Beyond carried so much potential and sadly the staff could not handle at all. It was such a pity.
