Honestly, I wish the shoujo manga and shoujo anime markets were much, much bigger. Sure, I don't read a lot of shoujo manga anymore and don't watch a lot of shoujo anime. However, I recognize the importance of their markets. When I say "much, much bigger", I am talking about a title like "Boys Over Flowers" having sold over 100 million copies globally.

It sure would be nice if we could get a few more copies printed here in the US, too. It's been prohibitively expensive for yeeeeeaaaars.

At least the longest running anime and animated show ever is “Sazae-san,” created by a woman, by the “grandmother of manga,” Machiko Hasegawa. She also established her own publishing company to print it. The manga sold over 86 million copies by 1999, and has been reprinted since then. It has had a huge influence on both male and female mangaka, and is a national treasure in Japan.

It seems a bit regressive to conflate shoujo manga with female mangaka since plenty of men write it as well and lots of famous female mangaka are known for shounen like Rumiko Takahashi. Sazae-san being popular doesn't change the fact shoujo manga is not getting the same level of recognition or success fans want it to.

True. “Boys Over Flowers” was truly a hit in many Asian countries with it’s many live action TV shows based on it. The F4, romance, bullying, and class division issues really caught on. I feel that “NANA” could have broken that 100 million mark if it had continued.
I’m glad that more Korean manhwa like “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?” is getting licensed in the US though, due to the surge in popularity of romance K-dramas.
