Are these the only kinds of stories that he can get funded? I'm sick of them too, but I sort of thought that he was a one-trick pony.

I can't really blame him for feeling this way. When you want to make different stories, but execs try to put you in a box because they think that's all the audience wants out of you, it's only natural to feel stagnant and suffocated. If it happens to someone of his success, then I can only imagine how much worse it is for develops who don't have that same level of fame.

Explains why the romance felt like the weakest part of the movie. Real shame that he wasn't able to get his full vision to the screen because I thought Suzume was real close to Your Name overall.

Or a classic "robot meets robot" story?

Tbf, this movie was spoiler[almost] about that. Except said cat was a little too lively Smile

I totally get why he'd want to try something new and being forced by your producer to deliver what "works."

I hope he has a bit more creative freedom for his next work and I say this as a romance fan.

Or how about a boy meets boy story or even non binary person going after anoth non binary story.
If he tied of the storylines he has done then try something different. He has been successful enough that he should have enough clout to make any movie/series.

I'm just glad everyone agrees that Suzume was kinda disappointing, including Shinkai.

What exactly constitutes "everyone"? I have seen plenty of people who loved the movie, and Shinkai is not saying he hated the way the movie turned out. He just has disappointment that his actual idea didn't get through.

Sounds like he needs to push back on his producer a bit. You’ve made multiple hit films you can use that as a license to make some bolder choices. At a certain point you don’t work for anyone, you are creating profitable projects that they are lucky to be a part of.

I'm relieved he feels this way even though I have enjoyed most of his films, particularly in more recent years. The Garden of Words and Weathering with You are definitely my top two picks. (I've yet to watch Suzume.)

I remember him saying during a behind the scenes interview for one of his earlier works that he was inspired by the idea of love. But, that was probably over a decade ago. So, if he is able to go in a different direction, I'm all for the change.

We will never know how the movie would have ended up if he got to go with his original plan, but editors and producers exist in part because sometimes letting creators having free reign doesn't produce the best result. Given his previous success, I think he deserved the chance, and I hope he gets more freedom next time.
