The Attack on Titan episode was quite harsh. A guy literally kills himself and a kid is stop by the Colossal. The latter especially was strong since it had Eren in depression for the genocide he was making while acknowledging the kid's death

What was the criteria? Because off the top of my head I can list better directed and animated episodes.

Popularity. Lmfao. Had to be a well known anime with a good episode. Even if lesser known anime has a better episode, it wouldn’t qualify since it’s not mainstream enough. Laughing

Worth noting this is a relatively smaller, newer group (founded sometime in the mid-2010s and has around 25 voting members give or take). Not the same critics association as the formerly named American-Canadian critics association that runs the Critics Choice Awards that air annually - the one most people would recognize. Still always cool to see anime being given more attention in these types of circles though!

An award like this isn't given just because something is a crazy sakuga-fest (and even then this episode had some great cuts of animation), but for its actual content. And this episode was a huge emotional high note, with Deku's friends forcibly dragging him out of the pit of despair he'd willingly thrown himself into. Reminding him that yes, it's okay to ask the people who care about you for help, to not feel like you need to carry the entire burden yourself. (One of Horikoshi's greatest strengths is writing these very human moments that you normally wouldn't expect from a mass-market battle shonen.) Even more importantly, it's the culmination of a character arc for Bakugo that spanned back to the start of the series and saw him evolve from a simple loudmouthed bully everyone loved to hate to a complex character in his own right. It was just a great 22 minutes of television.
