Not sure why they needed to change the title, or if that was demanded by Ghibli. I prefer the original.
Also in the press release it says GKids will continue the no-marketing policy. I really hope that changes in the months leading up to the NA release, as the west is not like Japan in being completely willing to see a movie just on studio/director cred alone.

I can understand the name change. How do you live is a really vague title that might create confusion. At the same time, this movie could seriously be DOA if they follow the lack of marketing. Mutafukas had full marketing and I still barely knew it was showing. I can't imagine how badly sales will be if the vast majority of people don't even know the movie exists.

Legit: Miyazaki has money. So this is just about the Oscar campaign.

And there you have it. A 2023 release that can at least fulfill the mandatory limit for Oscar consideration to get Ghibli and GKIDS on the Oscars in 2024.
Who knows when and if a union dub was recorded or when it can be recorded but subbed releases are eligible for Oscars. Expect a limited release in 2023 and a wide US release in 2024 if no dub has been made yet or if the SAG strike goes on for more than 2 to 3 months.

No one heard of the book and the title doesn´t describe the film in a marketable way so A Boy and his X it is. I have to agree with the distributors here. Better safe than confusing.

So happy and pleased they don't want to "confuse" uhhhhh "general audiences." Hopefully they will take cues from 4kids Entertainment and uhhhh "edit" its content so then it will be "fun for the whole family." It's the year 2023 people!!

At least according to SAG-AFTRA's FAQ, "dubbing work is not within the scope of the strike order". So I would assume that means that anime dubs are not affected by the strike.

The manga is pretty mediocre. I don't understand why they decide to adapt it into the anime.

despite claiming its source as OG on MAL, it does indeed have a 2017 manga. https://myanimelist.net/manga/111183/Kimitachi_wa_Dou_Ikiru_ka

Also, I have no intention of watching this movie. Marketing or no. Then again i'm not the biggest fan of his and his studio's movies, they're decent and good anime films in many cases but not nearly as great and master piece as fans make them out to be, but hey, that's just my opinion.

That's a manga adaptation of the original novel. If you read the article it's been stated that Miyazaki took inspiration from that novel for this film, but is not directly adapting it - and most certainly is not adapting a manga adaptation of the novel.

As stated above, that manga is an adaptation itself of the 1937 novel. Also, if you check(the MAL entry for the manga and the wiki for the novel), the protagonist here is different, the story is different, and it takes place during WW2(original story was written before WW2...). So less about being based on and more about being inspired of, I assume?

I feel like the whole no marketing thing will at least do fine in Japan since Miyazaki is a big enough name, but doing that in the states seems like sending it out to die. One of the most common complains I've seen about the past several Disney movies is that there was little to no advertising for most of them and that's Disney, not a limited release movie. I wish them luck though.

Studio Ghibli is famously known for letting their movies be edited, yes.

For some reason, the last major article on the movie is not indexed on the show page:
Hayao Miyazaki's How Do You Live? Film Will Get No Trailers Before Release

That has the best explanation of the way the title relates to the book:

Quote:
In the interview, Suzuki revealed vague hints about what kind of film How Do You Live? will be. He thinks the film is great, although it has very little to do with the story of Genzaburō Yoshino's 1937 novel by the same name, which Miyazaki was apparently inspired by. Suzuki said that Miyazaki first read the story when he was in middle school and that it stuck with him throughout the years, mainly because of the profundity of its title.

So... the main thing Miyazaki took from the book was its profound title...
So, The U.S. market decide... "better scrap that!"

I'm a bit annoyed but honestly not surprised at the title change. I will be curious though how long GKIDS intends to actually stick with that "no prior marketing" strategy, because all they really said was they have no intent at this time. As cool as the idea is, I feel like that could change as we get closer to an actual release date simply due to the demands and expectations of the US market here.

I think it's less a lack of advertising for Disney, and more that Disney is pumping out so much stuff on such a regular basis for so long that it's all faded into background noise. People don't have time to get hyped for a new Disney movie because they literally just walked out of one. And most of what they're coming out with is fairly mediocre cash-ins on top of that.

Disney is still making bank, mind you. But I don't think there's much excitement over what they're putting out, as much as it's a standard weekend popcorn movie at this point.
