Looks and sounds like Madoka, and that is already enough to get me excited!

C'mon Urobuchi, show us you've still got it...

The trailer has a lot of that Shinbou/Shaft magic --- looks promising.

It's been a decade of waiting but it's finally coming out! Here's to hoping this will be the definitive end to the series with no sequel bait.

So, some theory crafting, and I'm putting it here, now. That way, if I'm correct, I have it recorded. Spoiler tags, just in case. Everything in this trailer further supports a guess I made about the title a while back.

To re-establish the end of Rebellion, we know:

spoiler[Devil Homura separated Madoka into two. Ultimate Madoka (the Law of Cycles) is trapped outside the barrier. Basic Madoka is trapped within. Devil Homura gave back Madoka's ribbons. Devil Homura can rewrite memories and clean soul gems within her barrier.

We never see Homura use her bow or shield, so we cannot assume she has those powers anymore. Shield was tied to her timeline, and bow was tied to Madoka's ribbons. Devil Homura said wraiths exist and Kyubey would be necessary to store collected curses until they're gone.

We see the magical girls' rings, so magical girls still exist, likely fighting wraiths. Walpurgisnacht is not named "Walpurgisnacht", technically, since we never got a title card with its name written out. Its real name is unknown and its title is the "stage-constructing witch".]

Anyway, theory-crafting time.

spoiler[The Law of Cycles is not happy with Homura. The girls trapped outside the barrier lose to despair and/or summon their witch forms together and create a massive witch, Walpurgisnacht, to break into Homura's barrier. Or Ultimate Madoka herself, unable to give hope to Homura's universe, becomes Kreimhild Gretchen again, and this new form is Walpurgisnacht. I don't think the latter is true, though, because Madoka herself is far more powerful than Walpurgisnacht. Whatever the case, Walpurgisnacht is created and sent back in time with Madoka's/the Law of Cycles' powers. I believe the muffled, unidentified voices in the trailer to be Walpurgisnacht.

Either tied to this, or possibly separate, an alternate or future Homura arrives to save Homura from herself, or maybe to destroy Devil Homura. Whatever the case, new Homura has Madoka's ribbons and her bow, which is tied to them, despite us seeing basic Madoks already wearing her same ribbons in the trailer. Also, Devil Homura sports leggings and a black ribbon in her school uniform, as we see in the key visual and in the trailer, under the tower of papers.]

spoiler[Since Homura is in charge of fighting wraiths and collecting grief cubes (and stuffing them inside Kyubey), she might also be making new magical girl contracts, hence the tower of papers in the trailer and her "invitation" with the telephone (call center lol) at the beginning of the trailer. Either that, or the papers themselves symbolize the mountain of logistics and work that she must undergo to keep things stable. Tired Homura can be found underneath the tower in her leggings. There's also a bunch of Clara Dolls (who do her bidding) on the tower. Homura at the top is notably standing next to the chair that resembled her and Madoka's relationship in the films. The chair under the tower does not match any other chair we know, though.

Speaking of the trailer's intro, we see the moon split in half and framed by a tarot card border, XVIII, which is... well, "The Moon". It symbolizes fear, especially of the unknown, and implies the fear is imagined, not real. Fitting for Devil Homura, I think, since her "universe" is very unstable and she fears Madoka leaving her again.]

spoiler[Lastly, there are some funky colored backgrounds when some of the one-name credits show on the screen. There are vague, hard-to-see shapes within the colors. The first shows Kriemhild Gretchen when she enveloped the world at the end of the original show. The second and third seems to repeat the same thing. The FOURTH one is really funky. I see faces with masquerade masks on, and a skull to the left, closest to the camera. The fifth and last then recalls the scene where Kyubey explains to Madoka in episode 11 that Homura, when she gives up, will turn into a grief seed, accompanied by imagery of Homura hanging on a clock, turning into a grief seed, and the watch getting cut diagonally in half.]

[EDIT: Fixed your paragraph formatting and spaced out your spoiler tags for easier readability. -TK]

"Winter 2024" is ambiguous since that could mean either the end of the year or the beginning, like how the first season of anime this year was "winter 2023." I'm guessing it's end of year, but this always confuses me... can't find an exact date or month anywhere.

Anyway, despite (or due to) having no idea what in the world they have in store for us (the poster has Homura confronting yet another alternate version of herself while wielding the strangest-looking melee weapon I've ever seen, and that's not even getting into the trailer), I sure can't wait to see it. Rebellion was great and all, but it kinda left us with a decade-long cliffhanger with its extremely complicated and incomplete ending.

I’m always up for more Madoka, as long as it leads to a satisfying conclusion.

I like how this pops up around the same time I was complaining to someone about how the anime didn't need the Rebellion film since the conclusion was fine and the last movie just left the weirdest gap that didn't get answered since I saw it in the movie theater.

I guess it's good that they're finally addressing it but my only question now is that I totally fell off from watching the TV series that came out a few years ago, and I'm wondering if I should finish it beforehand, or can I just leave it and see the film when it eventually gets released in the West.
