It's definately a good thing the're using legit videos now. If there's just any announcements on the english dub version then everything's set.

Naruto Shippuden, sweet, and hopefully for Gintama, this will increase its fanbase (and hopefully make a license more likely).

I'm going to try out Gintama on CR, doctordoom85, and see if I like it. I'm glad they're also starting with episode 1, so people like me can try to get into it.

The fanbase might just increase by at least 1... (though I doubt it, sorry Razz)

Checked out Shippuuden and I'll skip over any stylistic translation nits and get to the biggies:

- NO OP and ED translations!! Especially significant for ep 91 since there's a brand new and truly fabulous ED! Luckily we have DB with us for one last ep to provide this.

- Omakes are included.. RAW. no translations for those either!!

edit: since they are allowing fansub translations to be uploaded for their titles, I wonder if they (CR or the publishers) are leaving this up to the viewers.. as a bonus? or just lack of time on their part? or lack of $$ if it's contracted out?

i would have never thought that anyone but a fansub group would care to bring this over here for a niche group of fans.

that's really astonishing; that whole show is filled with cultural references and injokes that north american viewers won't get unless they're explained.

I have questions.

1.) Has Gin Tama already been licensed?

If so, when will the english dub come out?

2.) If no to #1, then will it ever be licensed AND english dubbed?

If so, when would the english dub come out?

1. Yes, for internet distribution worldwide, by Crunchyroll. As for DVDs, no it has not to anyone's knowledge.

2. Crunchyroll has never paid to dub anything, although I wouldn't rule it out far in the future if they get really really big.

But dubbing Gintama in the first place would seem nearly impossible anyway. It's a 100+ episode gag series with a bazillion inside jokes and references that are barely translatable with subtitles, let alone in a dub. It'd take serious creativity and a major rewriter, and for a show that long it'd cost an insane amount.

Unless it's super popular on CR and gets picked up by a US television station for broadcast, Gintama will never be dubbed.

I really like cr's new stratgey. But i really wish they would stream Katekyo Hitman Reborn. I hope and pray that they do someday.

Well, not to crush your hopes and dreams, but that's patently false. There have been any number of manga series released in the US whose corresponding anime adaptations haven't made it over here (or took far longer to do so if they did), and there have even been a few anime series that made it over without their original manga. With the occasional exception of Viz Media, the manga and anime sides of the business are entirely separate.

If they were to dub Gintama.. like samuelp said, they'd have to do some major rewriting of the script, so much so that you couldn't call it a translation anymore, for many scenes at least. They'd have to pull a Robotech. (.. ok, not quite.. but still)
