Wait ... wtf?? I haven't even GOTTEN this yet. I pre-ordered it from Right Stuf and it isn't even slated to be released until the 6th :/ ... should I cancel my order? Do you think the problems will be noticeable on a PS3 (blu-ray) player?

How are people noticing the issue when it hasn't been released yet, or is there somewhere else to buy it?

Not happy ...

Maybe not, but offering to do something about it right away is a step in the right direction.
/bad puns Wink

I don't believe I experienced anything what the article talked about, although the picture quality seemed to have a "softened" touch, as if looking through an extra layer or glass or something. Granted, I was watching on an upscaling dvd player to a flat screen tv. And I am no tech expert when it comes to these matters. Maybe other readers can offer their more seasoned opinions on how Toradora or Persona looked to them.

Edit: JenTheHen, I preordered my Toradora through RightStuf and got it earlier this week...

Hmm, I didn't notice any problems with my Toradora DVDs... But then again, I'm not sure whether or not I'd know what to look for. I'm not very tech-savvy, exactly what kinds of problems are these?

I've gotten products from Right Stuf before the official release date sometimes.
For anyone interested this topic was brought up in the anime sub forum. The topic creator had stills that showed various ghosting issues. I think its good that NIS is taking care of the problem, but I hope this doesn't hurt them too bad financially.

I noticed the same thing on my set, but I wondered if it was psychosomatic or something because I was already aware of the visual problems other people had reported. In any case, I played the first episode and didn't get any ghosting or noticeable aliasing so I don't feel any need to trade them in for new discs.

It's a pity for NISA and for those whose discs really are effed. I remember some NISA reps were on the ANNcast last year and they sounded like nice peeps. I'm sure this has to be embarrassing for them.

NIS America said that it reviewed the issues and agreed "that there is room for improvement."

This statement freaked me out. Given the DVD process has been pretty much established for, I don't know, 20 years, the "room for improvement" was perceived as "We took a short cut to save costs and got burned."

I've heard good things about Toradora and I'm going to check it out, but this news put my guard up.

If they took shortcuts on video, where else were they applied?

Seriously? I got mine two days ago, and I live in NORWAY.

Can't say I noticed any issues, though, but like Neocloud, I'm not tech-savvy or sharp-eyed enough to have noticed, at least not this time.

I got mine on the 22nd from Rightstuf.

I didn't notice any video issues when watching on my mac, though there were subtitle problems on two episodes on disc 2. Nothing big enough that I'd resend my discs, though.

Seeing as I started the forum threads about the issues both here and on NIS America's website, I sure noticed the issues. I am very grateful for NIS America's quick response and hope the remastered DVD's fix the ghosting and aliasing. Very Happy

At the same time, I do not understand how some people don't notice the issues. Yes, some setups may minimize the problems, but more often than not I believe it to be people just not noticing, as was the case with a friend I presented an episode of Toradora! to. She believed it to be a "common effect" used in newer shows to look more realistic. That statement really had me scratching my head. After popping in discs from various other recent anime, she retracted her statement. Razz

I have tried the discs with my PS3 upscaled to 1080p on my main viewing screen, with my MacBook in DVD Player and VLC and tried every deinterlacing option, and with a regular DVD player hooked up to a SD CRT television. All 3 options displayed the same ghosting and aliasing issues pretty consistently. Various deinterlacing options on my MB reduced the aliasing slightly, but the ghosting remained.

Well, they turned to MX Media for the TL and subs.

They were overall fine, but one of the principal characters was given a valley girl accent and some of the subtitles on the episode previews were oddly positioned.

Given NISA's history of questionable translations, though, maybe it's just as well they didn't keep it in house.

The majority of video buyers are like your friend. They are not going to notice or know how to notice these issues. Only a gross problem will be picked up.

Basically, people who are videophiles or who don't have setups that can compensate are the ones that will pick up this kind of a problem.

So the people who didn't notice are going to scratch their heads and think, "Gee, I didn't notice anything. Should I take advantage of the replacement program?".

Can you clarify the "valley girl" accent? I was under the impression this series was subtitle only.

Oddly positioned subtitles don't bother me that much, but overused, such as with Lucky Star jumping from top to bottom at the whim of confusing viewers, will make this product a definite no purchase for me.

Like, duh! They're totally sub-only. Like, omigod! Wink

The mispositioned subs were basically over the upcoming episode title in half of the previews, or positioned in the center of the screen above the longer titles. Aside from that, there was just a sign caption that was placed too close to the right edge of the screen, causing my TV's overscan to cut it off. None of that should affect viewing unless someone's a big fan of episode previews, it just shows that someone wasn't paying attention in Q.A.

WTH?? Are you saying I'll have to read "like" after every 3rd word????

*faints

Man, this product is getting worse with every posting. I can't stand listening to "like", and I sure won't appreciate reading it.

Hmm. Sorry, NIS, this just turned into a Bargain Bin product. Or at least $19.99.

Welcome to the anime community in North America.
