I think the bigger question right now is how long is this planned to run. Again, the large amount of material still not covered and the atrocious pacing of the previous 3 seasons makes me wonder as to how they could possibly be calling this a "fourth and final season"

I believe it is the push with Shana receiving its final season at the same time. The company probably wishes to wrap up their anime departments for these series and give Rie some new loli-tsundere characters to associate herself with. Wink

But yes, the episode count is a very hot topic as far as the forums and chats I've been lurking in. Based on the first 3 seasons the patterns on 12-13 will probably hold true but I wouldn't put it past them to expand this to a 24-26 episode season to cover the ground. Having waited as long as many did for this season there is going to be some added pressure on them to produce something worth waiting for and with Yamaguchi in association with the creative control I think we won't be disappointing unless the ending is like season 3s for the season 1 & 2 endings were on a note that could have been left and people would understand to follow the Light Novel if they wished to continue following while the anime ending of season 3 was an obvious tension point where those who just follow the anime beg for a follow-up.

It will be surprising to see where this goes over the holiday month leading up to the premiere. Especially from licensing talks, as I still have a feeling that someone will want to pick up the series as a package deal and distribute at a subbed level at least in the US despite FUNimation's drop and other claims.
