So much for "Otaku" being an undesirable label in Japan...

Ha you can say that again.
I use the term all the time, but even though everyone knows what it really means, they know I don't mean it that way.

Although the term is not permanently linked to die-hard psycho child molesters anymore, the overall assumption is still that otaku are socially awkward, obsessed individuals. I can't speak for others, but that description doesn't exactly sound 'desirable' to me.

A succesful exhibit about otaku doesn't mean that they are now accepted or understood by the common Japanese. I've seen exhibits about other socially risque topics, and that wasn't just in Japan.

By the way, have you seen the figure you get with the exhibit book? It shows a giant 'moe' figure 'riding' the Tokyo loop line. It's very well made (even the buildings match with the ones in Akiba), but the fact that she can be stripped down to her underwear speaks volumes.
