Trivia:

For the production of this film, the female protagonist Emu Hino was renamed Emu O'Hara (named after the Gone With the Wind character Scarlett O'Hara).

Co-stars Mark Dacascos and Julie Condra married each other shortly after this film was released.

Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary wrote part of the screenplay.

Mark and Christopher Gans later worked on Brotherhood of the Wolf.

While being the third live-action film adaptation of the manga (after the 1990 low-budget Hong Kong films Killer's Romance and The Dragon from Russia), Crying Freeman is closer to the source material.

Julie Condra's voice was dubbed over by Deborah Kara Unger, as director Christophe Gans felt that Condra's voice was not deep enough for the Emu O'Hara character.

Tchéky Karyo's voice was dubbed over by Ron Perlman, as Karyo's French accent was too heavy for his role as a Canadian detective.

The producers initially wanted Jason Scott Lee for the role of Freeman after his performance in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, but he could not commit to the film due to a three-picture contract he signed with Universal Pictures at the time.
