Katsuyuki Konishi's Bacon Character Leaves Impression on Fellow Pop Team Epic Stars

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Katsuyuki Konishi voiced a character named Chōmp-Chōmp Bacon in the second part of the eighth episode of Pop Team Epic that debuted on Sunday. The "B" part of the episode begins with the anthropomorphic bacon character excitedly preparing bacon to eat and then burning himself. The performance seems to have made a particular impression on fellow cast and staff of the show.

Konishi as Chōmp-Chōmp Bacon says in the episode, "I'm Chōmp-Chōmp Bacon. And I love to eat bacon! I'm going to fry my favorite bacon today! First, oil the frying pan and lay a slice of bacon on it. Hot!" Konishi also voiced three other characters and narrated the second half of the episode.

Masaya Onosaka, who played Popuko in the second part of the episode, commented on the performance on Twitter. He said, "Konishi's Bacon's good, right?"

Onosaka mentioned working with Daisuke Namikawa in the tweet and remarked that the casting may have been the result of his previous work with Namikawa on You're Being Summoned, Azazel. Namikawa played Pipimi in the new episode of Pop Team Epic. Onosaka and Namikawa voiced Azazel and Akutabe, respectively, in You're Being Summoned, Azazel. They also previously worked together on a variety of anime, including voicing France and Italy in Hetalia. Konishi voiced America and Canada in Hetalia, and the trio of voice actors have all voiced roles in anime such as One Piece, One-Punch Man, Case Closed, Bleach, and Prince of Tennis. Their familiarity with each other undoubtedly contributed to their apparent rapport while recording on Pop Team Epic.

Jun Aoki, who is in charge of the anime's series composition, said on Twitter that Onosaka and Namikawa had created their own versions of Chōmp-Chōmp Bacon during recording. Drawing inspiration from Konishi's performance, Onosaka and Namikawa apparently transformed into the meat character while recording the "Pop Team Epic" title call for the episode's second half. They read the title in an exaggerated style reminiscent of Chōmp-Chōmp Bacon. Aoki said that the pair kept doing unusable versions of the title call, and they ended up doing more than 10 takes.

The anime's eighth episode also offered a unique experience for viewers online. Probably inspired by The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya's "Endless Eight" episodes, streaming service AbemaTV streamed the episode eight times in a row when it debuted on Sunday.
