Pop Team Epic Creator Draws Kirin Tea Girl Ad Parody
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Kirin Beverage company's latest ad campaign was a flop among its target demographic. Apparently images assigning negative female stereotypes to particular types of Gogo no Kōcha drinks did not convince women to purchase said drinks and the blowback led the company to pull the images from its Twitter account.
The images still made the rounds on social media and even caught the attention of Pop Team Epic creator Bkub Okawa. Okawa created his own version of "control-freak girl who's going in circles," but in his signature style and with a few subtle changes. Instead of the character's hat reading "Lemon", Okawa changed it to "Renoir," either an oddly placed endorsement for the French impressionist or Ginza Renoir, a popular coffee shop chain in Japan.
Is Okawa commenting on the type of customers that frequent Renoir, or maybe placing a subtle dig at Kirin by mentioning another drink establishment, or this is Pop Team Epic and it actually means nothing at all? Who can say.
