The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the organization that awards the film industry's Oscars — has announced that it will host the "Anime! High Art - Pop Culture" exhibition at its Beverly Hills headquarters from May 15 to August 23. The Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, Germany developed the free display of nearly 400 cels, clips and character models in partnership with the academy. Akira, Dragon Ball Z, Ghost in the Shell, Pokémon: The First Movie, Princess Mononoke, Sailor Moon (pictured at right), and Yu-Gi-Oh! are among the titles featured. The exhibition is divided into shōnen, shōjo, early anime, Studio Ghibli, science fiction, fantasy, and adults-only areas. The history and evolution of both anime and manga will be covered.

The same galleries at the Academy headquarters hosted an exhibition of Akira Kurosawa, the Oscar-wnning director of Rashōmon, Ran, and other classic films last year. During the exhibition, Kurosawa Production announcd that its late founder's last unproduced script, The Masque of the Black Death, will be animated for a theatrical release in 2010. The academy honored Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away film with an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2002. Miyazaki and Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle film later earned a nomination in the same category.
