Mizuki's Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths Gets Harvey Nod

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Ōji Suzuki's A Single Match manga also nominated

Shigeru Mizuki's Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths manga received a nomination in the Harvey Awards, which honors outstanding work in comics and sequential art, on Monday. It has been nominated in the "Best American Edition of Foreign Material" category. Ōji Suzuki's A Single Match manga is also nominated in the same category. The two works are nominated alongside Jose-Louis Bocquet, Jean-Luc Fromental, and Stanislas Barthelemy's Adventures of Herge, Matz and Luc Jacamon's The Killer Vol. 3: Modus Vivendi!, and Milo Manara and Hugo Pratt's The Manara Library Vol. 1: Indian Summer and Other Stories.

Drawn and Quarterly released Mizuki's Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths manga in April. The one-volume manga is a "semi-autobiographical account of the desperate final weeks of a Japanese infantry unit at the end of World War II." Mizuki drew from his own experiences as a soldier in that war to depict the horrors of battle.

Drawn and Quarterly released Suzuki's A Single Match manga in January 2011. Suzuki was among the "1-2-3" pioneers of the alternative gekiga storytelling movement at Garo magazine with Shin'ichi Abe (Aihasu no Kazoku) and Mandarake store chain founder Masuzou Furukawa during 1970s and 1980s. (When combined, the second syllables of these creators' given names spell out "One, Two, Three" in Japanese.) A Single Match is a collection of "hauntingly elliptical short stories" that explores memory, relationships, and loss.

Last year the Ax: Alternative Manga anthology was nominated in the "Best American Edition of Foreign Material" category for the Harvey Awards.

The Harvey Awards will be held in conjunction with Baltimore Comic-Con in Baltimore, MD on September 8, 2012.

Mizuki's Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths has also been nominated for the Best Reality-Based Work award and the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia award for the 2012 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, which will be held on July 13 at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
