Weathering With You Film Tops Live-Action Aladdin, The Wind Rises at Japan's Box Office

Makoto Shinkai's new film Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) has earned 12.1 billion yen (about US$113 million) as of Sunday, its 52nd day of screening in Japan. The film has sold 9 million tickets so far. The film was the #8 highest-earning Japanese film of all time in Japan as of last week, but it has now surpassed The Wind Rises (12.02 billion yen) to inch up to #7. The movie is also now the #6 Japanese animated film of all time, and the highest-grossing film — live-action or animated, domestic or overseas — in Japan this year after topping the live-action Aladdin film.

Shinkai is credited with the original work, and also directed and wrote the film's scripts for CoMix Wave Films. Masayoshi Tanaka (your name., anohana, The Anthem of the Heart) designed the characters, Atsushi Tamura (The Cat Returns, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin) was the animation director, and Hiroshi Takiguchi (The Garden of Words, Ajin) was the art director. Story Inc. is credited as producer, and TOHO distributes the film. RADWIMPS' Yōjirō Noda composed five vocal theme songs for the film, and the group also provided 27 background music songs for the film. Tōko Miura sang RADWIMPS' "Grand Escape (Movie edit) feat.
